Overview
ChatDaters is a dating app I built on my own in a three-day sprint during my ChatGenie internship (July 2024). Users swipe through profiles, get matched when interest is mutual, and chat once matched.
What it does
- Swipe matching: Tinder-style like and pass, with mutual-match detection.
- Live notifications: new matches and messages arrive over WebSockets.
- In-app messaging: a chat thread opens between two users when they match.
- Accounts: registration and login with Devise, plus profile editing through the GraphQL API.
How it is built
The backend is a Ruby on Rails API with Action Cable for the WebSocket side. The front end is a Vue 3 single-page app on Vite and Tailwind CSS, using an Apollo client to talk to the API. The repository is a monorepo merged from the two original repositories, with the git history kept.
What I Learned
Three days is short enough that scope is the main decision. I kept it to swiping, matching and messaging, with authentication and the interface built around those.
